COM Express module adopts the Sandy Bridge CPUs Intel forgot to announce
Jan 6, 2011 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsEurotech says it will offer a COM Express module with two of Intel's new “Sandy Bridge” processors. The Adbc8034 will sport the embedded-oriented Core i7-2715QE or Core i5-2515E CPUs, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, four SATA ports, eight USB ports, VGA/SDVO/LVDS video, and “multiple” PCI Express interfaces, according to the company.
Being first out of the blocks is clearly important to Eurotech, which announced its previous Adbc8031 COM Express module almost exactly a year ago. That release came just days after Intel announced twelve new, embedded-specific Core i7 models, including the 620E (2.53GHz/3.20GHz with 35W TDP), the 620LE (2.0GHz/2.8GHz at 25W), and the 620UE (1.06GHz/2.13GHz at 18W) Eurotech chose for its module.
This week, meanwhile, Intel announced a bevy of what it calls — rather misleadingly, as our full coverage pointed out — its "second-generation Core products," previously known by their collective "Sandy Bridge" code name. The new processors include a new microarchitecture, a 256-bit instruction set known as AVX (advanced vector extensions), enhanced GPUs (graphics processing units), and dedicated silicon for tasks such as transcoding video from one format to another, according to the chipmaker.
Our Jan. 3 coverage (and Intel's two-days-later press release) listed 15 new mobile offerings and 14 new desktop CPUs in the Sandy Bridge range. Believe it or not, Eurotech has found two more Sandy Bridge CPUs — unheralded by Intel — to feature on its Adbc8034.
These are the Core i7-2715QE (where the "QE" stands for "quad-core embedded") and the Core i5-2515E ("E" is for "embedded"). According to the spec sheets that appear to have been lurking on Intel's website:
- the Core i7-2715QE has a 2.1GHz clock speed and 3GHz TurboBoost frequency, four cores, 6MB of cache, and a 35-Watt TDP
- the Core i5-2515E has a 2.5GHz clock speed and 3.1GHz TurboBoost frequency, two cores, 3MB of cache, and a 35-Watt TDP
Therefore, it would seem, Eurotech's new Adbc8034 won't have lower power consumption than last year's Adbc8031, but — if Intel's claims for Sandy Bridge are true — should perform better. Thanks to use of the QM67 Express chipset, meanwhile, the module can accept up to 8GB of DDR3 ECC memory, according to its manufacturer.
Eurotech has released neither a picture of the Adbc8034 nor a data sheet, making our spec list incomplete. However, the device will provide VGA, SDVO, and LVDS video interfaces, four SATA ports, eight USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet interface, and multiple PCI Express interfaces, according to the company.
Stated Masaki Takahashi, the company's executive officer for overseas business development, "This module packs many features in a very compact and easy to use form factor. The Adbc8034 is a comprehensive platform that is designed to simplify the development process and to reduce time to market for our customers."
Specifications offered by Eurotech for the Adbc8034 include:

Further information
According to Eurotech, the Adbc8034 is orderable now and will be delivered during the second quarter of this year. Operating system support will include Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Embedded Standard 7, and Wind River Linux, the company adds.
While no product page was present for the Adbc8034 at the time of writing, Eurotech does offer an overall online catalog listing its previous COM Express offerings.
