Creating a “Universal Communicator” prototype

Oct 31, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

An article at DeviceForge discusses a solution to the growing complexity of wireless personal area network (WPAN) technology: a device capable of communicating regardless of the type which WPAN connection options are present. Intel is currently prototyping such a device, according to the article.

The article asserts that mobile connected devices must evolve to support intelligent interaction with multiple, heterogeneous networks and services. This poses “numerous difficult technology challenges,” which Intel has attempted to address in prototypes that deploy “Adaptive Communication Technologies” (ACT).

The Intel prototypes entail:

  • Intel PCA processor — Based on Intel XScale technology
  • Integrated 802.11b and GSM/GPRS radios
  • Mobility Management Driver Stack (MMDS)
  • Voice Call Unification Architecture (VCUA)
  • Antenna layout, shielding, and optimal spatial positioning
  • Advanced media capabilities
  • Usability technologies
  • SD card slot
