EBX board Atom-izes legacy systems

Apr 20, 2009 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 3 views

Adlink is now sampling an EBX-format SBC (single board computer) featuring Intel's Atom N270 processor. Targeting migration of legacy systems, the LittleBoard 735 has a PC-104-Plus expansion site, dual video outputs, two Ethernet ports, seven USB ports, plus CompactFlash and Mini-PCI Express sockets, the company says.

Branded “Ampro by Adlink,” the LittleBoard 735 results from Adlink's 2008 acquisition of Ampro, and continues the venerable LittleBoard product line in an updated form. The device uses the 8.0 x 5.75-inch EBX form factor, which includes a PC/104-Plus expansion site and can therefore accept a stack of PC/104 and/or PC/104-Plus modules.

The LittleBoard 735 uses Intel's Atom N270 processor, familiar from dozens of netbooks, along with the inevitable 945GSE (945GCSE northbridge and 82801GBM southbridge) chipset and an ITE IT8888 PCI-to-ISA Bridge. Via a single SODIMM slot, the SBC can accept up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, according to Adlink.

Adlink has used the LittleBoard 735's board real estate — ample by today's standards — to include both a CompactFlash socket and a Mini-PCI Express socket. Therefore, the device can readily accept an optional wireless networking module, for example, and also include solid-state storage on board.

The SBC has two SATA ports, four serial ports (two RS232, and two RS232/422/485), seven USB 2.0 ports, a PS/2 interface, plus speaker, microphone, and headphone interfaces. The board supports dual CRT or LVDS displays, has dual Ethernet interfaces (one gigabit, one 10/100), and offers eight GPIOs, the company adds.

Finally, Adlink says the LittleBoard 735 is available in both standard and extended temperature versions, with operating ranges of -20 to 70 deg. C (-4 to 158 deg. F) and -40 to 85. deg C (-40 to 185 deg. F), respectively. The SBC's 2.36mm board thickness will help it resist shock and vibration, the company adds.

Features and specifications listed by Adlink for the LittleBoard 735 include:

  • Processor — 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
