Embedded Linux box fits into CD drive bay
Sep 30, 2005 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 25 viewsTeam ASA is shipping an XScale-based Linux system designed to fit in a CD drive bay. The NPWR-SCE is based on an Intel storage processor, sports dual gigabit-Ethernet ports and a removable SATA hard drive, and targets military and EMS vehicles, NAS, iSCSI controllers, web servers, and “embedded Linux engines,” the… company says.

According to Team ASA, the NPWR-SCE can be installed in any PC with an open 5.25-inch half-height drive bay. The 5 x 8 inch steel case has dual cooling fans, and will maintain air flow “even in the tightest configurations,” the company claims.
The NPWR-SCE offers an impressive complement of I/O, along with dual fans and a jumper to set the SCSI ID

The NPWR-SCE is based on Intel's 80321 (Verde) processor, a chip Team ASA has previously used in SBCs (single-board computers) targeting storage appliances based on Linux. Intel appears to have rebranded the 80321 as the IOP321 (I/O processor 321) in recent iterations. Embedded Linux development tools are available for the IOP321/80321 from both TimeSys and LynuxWorks.
