An embedded Linux development services specialist in San Jose, Calif. has partnered with an embedded Linux software supplier in Beijing, China. Embedded Software Group (ESG) and MiniGUI graphics stack supplier Beijing Feynman Software Technology say their partnership will help them better serve customers in China.

The companies plan to collaborate on embedded Linux OS ports, kernel development and optimization, driver development, and integration — in addition to services around MiniGUI, Feynman's lightweight graphics library with a built-in windowing system.

ESG describes itself as a provider of device-level Linux development services, including OS ports, BSPs, drivers, applications, and verification/testing. It serves a global clientele, it says, with customers that include Cirrus Logic, Hewlett-Packard, and Transmeta, for whom it developed a Linux-based DVR design.

MiniGUI has been used by customers in China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia, Feynman says, in mobile phones, video telephones, hand-held devices, medical equipment, industrial controllers, and query terminals.

Sahel Binesh, CEO of ESG, said, “In working with domestic Chinese companies, Feynman has found that there are many customers who are [unfamiliar] with low level operating systems, or who lack experience in kernel development. These are two areas in which ESG has decades of expertise. Feynman [knows] both the technical and business needs of the Chinese embedded industry. We can help Chinese companies compete more effectively domestically and overseas.”

Yongming Wei, chief architect and CEO of Beijing Feynman, stated, “Chinese companies are realizing they cannot do everything themselves in order to stay competitive. They need to outsource some of their software development and optimization. This partnership will bring world-class embedded software services into China directly.”

Wei adds, “ESG is a dynamic, technology-driven enterprise with a thorough understanding of embedded systems development and the advantage of more than twenty years of experience, beginning with the early development of HP Unix OS low level kernels.”

Feynman recently updated MiniGUI with features aimed at higher-end devices, after which Wei wrote a technical introduction to MiniGUI explaining features in the newest release.
