Embedded Linux switch offers seamless RAN/LAN roaming
Jan 14, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 7 viewsGerman mobile infrastructure specialist Giga Stream has used MontaVista Linux Professional running in a carrier grade application environment to build a “Universal Navigation Switch” (UNS) that integrates voice, data, and radio access to support seamless roaming between Radio Access Networks (RANs) and Wireless LANs.

UNS comprises a 19″ rack, a Core Network Switch, and satellite Topology Modules that connect to a variety of network technologies, such as E1, ATM, or IP-Ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet) MPLS mobile core networks.
Giga Stream says its UNS product enables 3G and WiFi to complement rather than compete with each other by allowing mobile users to establish a session on one, and then move back and forth between the two. It achieves this by integrating 3G, WLAN/WiFi, and high performance IP packet transmissions on a single platform.
Giga Stream asserts that UNS will empower mobile operators to respond quickly to changing mobile business environments, and facilitate a smooth migration from the current TDM, ATM transport toward all-IP internetworking.
“With UNS and MontaVista Linux, we can offer mobile operators and network infrastructure system integrators custom software solutions on a robust OS and development environment to deliver the best possible mobile user experience,” says Thomas Maul, founder and CEO of Giga Stream.
The Giga Stream UNS was announced in October at the ITU World Telecom 2003 Show in Geneva and is available now, with prices starting at 480,000. Giga Stream will target European and Asian markets initially, with North and South America to follow. Customer installations are already in progress, according to Giga Stream.
