Emerson completes acquisition of Mot embedded unit

Jan 9, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Emerson Network Power (ENP), a division of Emerson Electric, announced it has completed its acquisition of Motorola's Embedded Communications Computing group. The ECC sells Linux-compatible, carrier-grade AdvancedTCA (ATCA), MicroTCA (MTCA), CompactPCI, and VMEbus products to telecom,… mil/aero, medical, and automation customers.

Announced in September, the deal brings Motorola's sizable ATCA and MTCA (pictured above left) product lines and customer base to ENP, which launched its Embedded Systems group under its Network Power brand after acquiring Artesyn Communications, the third-largest U.S. maker of carrier network equipment. The April 2007 Artesyn merger brought ENP the KatanaQp ATCA-blade products (pictured at right) and PmPPC7448 ProcessorPMC mezzanine card line (pictured below). Artesyn has previously supported Wind River Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) on both product lines, but also began offering MontaVista's CGE as a pre-loaded option for various products in 2005.

Motorola's ECC has also used both Linux software providers. The company has long enjoyed an OEM relationship with MontaVista, allowing it to deliver network equipment pre-installed with MontaVista Linux, Carrier Grade Edition. In August it announced a joint development, marketing, and support agreement with Wind River around both VxWorks and Wind River Linux.

Both MontaVista and Wind River pitched in with quotes hailing the acquisition.

Stated MontaVista CTO Jim Ready, “MontaVista has worked with Motorola's Embedded Computing group since 1999. We've also had a long-standing, successful relationship with Emerson, and through our experience with both of these innovative companies, we are confident that together, they will be a major force in the telecom industry.”

Stated Wind River CEO Ken Klein, “Over the years, Wind River has worked closely with Motorola's Embedded Computing group. We view this transition as a positive move for the industry and look forward to continuing our relationship with the Embedded Computing business of Emerson Network Power.”

Emerson Network Power offers a wide range of power, embedded computing, precision cooling, and connectivity products and services. More information on ENP's embedded products can be found here.
