Jun 16, 2000 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewseWEEK editor Ken Popovich reports on a panel discussion about Information Appliances at this week's Embedded Processor Forum held in San Jose, CA. The panel consisted of executives from Cirrus Logic, Microsoft, InfoGear, S3, and PictureIQ, and was moderated by Michael Slater of Cahners MicroDesign Resources. Popovich writes . . .
“While the long-term outlook for information devices appears bright, they still face major obstacles, including the lack of product-specific support services and infrastructure, according to a panel of industry experts.”
“While information appliances have begun surging onto the market, thanks in part to new technologies that have resulted in small yet powerful computing devices, the gadgets still face a rough road ahead as they enter what is still an evolving market, the experts said.”
” . . . the experts noted the increasing role of Linux in the embedded processor arena and generally agreed that PCs will likely continue to have a place in the home.”
” . . . But while [Microsoft's] Laepple touted the benefits of [the company's] newest operating system for mobile computing devices, it was clear that the Linux operating system is gaining headway, at least among panel members.”
