HTC and LG prep new Snapdragon-based Android phones

Apr 8, 2010 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Specs have leaked for several high-end 1GHz Snapdragon-based Android smartphones, including the AMOLED-enabled HTC Incredible, which is set for an April 29 Verizon launch, reports say. LG is also riding the Snapdragon with its upcoming, QWERTY-enabled Aloha C710, which appears similar to a tipped LG Eclipse LU2300 Android phone.

The proliferating market for Android phones has grown so large that we can no longer report every tip, spec leak, or "sighting in the wild." Even the dedicated Android phone sites seem to be having trouble keeping up. However, when we see high-end phones running the Qualcomm Snapdragon system-on-chip (SoC), we tend to take notice. This week has seen spec leaks for two - or possibly three — such phones, which appear to be in the same league with the Nexus One, HTC Evo 4G, and other recent high-end contenders.

HTC Incredible

Destined for the Verizon Wireless network, the HTC Incredible will debut on April 29, according to AndroidandMe. Phandroid, which posted the photo at right, has also published what it says is the entire user manual for the Android 2.1-based smartphone.

Phandroid originally tipped the phone in early January, and PocketNow followed up with a photo and a few specs in February. Like HTC's recently announced, Sprint WiMAX-enabled Evo 4G, as well as its earlier Google-branded Nexus One and HTC's Desire and Legend, the Incredible runs on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, says Phandroid.

The phone offers a 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 display, which is smaller than the Evo 4G's 4.3-inch display, but, like the Desire and Legend, offers AMOLED technology, for easier viewing and brighter colors, says the report. The Incredible is said to be equipped with 576MB of RAM, 512MB of flash storage, and removable microSD memory, expandable up to 32GB.

Other features on the dual-band 1xRTT, EVDO Rev A phone are said to include 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1, aGPS, a headset jack, an eight-megapixel camera, and the usual sensors. The 4.6-ounce HTC Incredible will run Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI layer, says the story.

LG's Aloha C710 and Eclipse LU2300

LG Electronics, which previously entered Android waters with its Snapdragon-based LG Eve GW620, and more recently launched a more modest GT540 handset, is prepping one — or is it two? — new Android-on-Snapdragon, keyboard-slider phones, according to reports.

The Aloha C710 appears to rank with the best, according to AndroidCentral, which relayed the specs originally posted on Dutch site, Tweakers. The limited specs appear to match up with slightly more detailed info reported on this week by AndroidandMe for a Korea-destined phone called the LG Eclipse LU2300 (pictured below from an AndroidandMe posting).

Both phones run Android 2.1 on a 1GHz Snapdragon, offer slider QWERTY keyboards and 802.11n WiFi, as well as 3.5-inch, 800 × 480 touchscreens, say the reports. According to AndroidandMe, the Eclipse LU2300 screen uses AMOLED technology, and the keyboard sports four key rows.

The story also notes that the phone features a five-megapixel camera, 720p DivX-compatible video playback, as well as WiFi, GPS, and a DMB tuner. An April or May release is projected, probably for Korea's SK Telecom, says the story.

According to Tweakers, the similar LG Aloha C710 supports GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA, and HSUPA networks. The site also says the phone offers Dutch language support, suggesting a launch in the Netherlands.

While Tweakers did not offer a photo, it would seem that if the phones aren't identical, they are at least two versions of the same design. It's possible that only a few special features separate them, such as the Eclipse's DMB tuner for the Korean market.
