IBM launches Open Source performance tool project for Linux
May 22, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 viewsIBM recently launched Performance Inspector as an open source project on its developerWorks website. According to IBM, Performance Inspector provides a suite of tools that help identify performance bottlenecks in C/C++ and Java code, and problems with Linux kernel interaction, including sample-based profiling, monitoring at the thread level, and more.
Performance Inspector provides a mechanism to collect performance trace data in a convenient way, IBM said. It provides a core set of hooks in the kernel to keep track of scheduling, interrupt, CPU, and other events, and is SMP enabled. Additionally, it has a time based profiler facility that is convenient for identifying hot spots in the execution of application and kernel code, said IBM.
The majority of the project is released as GPL code, with the exception of some LGPL shared libraries. The current release supports IA32, PowerPC, and S/390.
