Italian real-time Linux distro adds support for x86, ARM SBCs

Italian embedded Linux house Koan Software says that its real-time embedded Linux distribution for industrial applications now supports several x86 and ARM-based SBCs (single board computers) from BOSER and ICOP. KLinux is based on RTAI (real-time application interface).

Supported boards include x86-based Boser HS2603 and ICOP Vortex86 (pictured at right — the board behind the unique Violet Dal lamp). Additionally, Klinux also supports an unnamed board that uses Atmel's AT91RM9200 SoC (system-on-chip), Koan says.

Koan began shipping the current 2.0 version of Klinux in July of 2004. The distribution is based on a 2.4.26 series kernel, and includes:

  • An open source development environment
  • Support for wxWidgets (formerly wxWindows), a “mature C++ GUI framework for cross-platform development”
  • KTX (Koan Toolkit eXtension) configuration utility, which can be used to create and set up cross-platform development environments without specific knowledge of the target hardware, according to Koan.

All the toolkits included in Klinux are released under GPL license, Koan says.

“Klinux is the best-selling embedded Linux distribution in Italy,” claims Marco Cavallini of Koan Software.
