American Arium will add an integrated development environment (IDE) from SlickEdit to the software that drives its hardware-assisted debuggers. Arium's hardware-assisted debuggers target embedded Linux (and other OS) development on small systems such as cell phones lacking a serial port or LAN interface.

Arium will incorporate SlickEdit's Visual SlickEdit with its formerly console-based SourcePoint software. Visual SlickEdit is a multi-language IDE also licensed by FSMLabs for use in its embedded Linux development tools.

American Arium's SourcePoint debugger, in conjunction with hardware tools, provides ANSI terminal functionality using “debug communications channel” (DCC) commands over the target's JTAG port — a mechanism that works “straight from system reset,” according to Arium. SourcePoint supports ARM7/ARM9, TI OMAP, and Intel XScale, Pentium, and Itanium processors.

The Visual SlickEdit IDE for SourcePoint will be available on both Windows and Linux host platforms, providing configurable menus, fonts, and key bindings, along with new symbol-finding tools. Developers can switch between debug and edit modes to make simple changes quickly, according to Arium.
