Lineo Solutions spins Linux 2.6 BSP for Renesas 2D board
Apr 19, 2005 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsLineo Solutions of Japan is readying a Linux 2.6 BSP (board support package) for a reference and prototyping board from Renesas Technology aimed at graphical consumer devices. The BSP supports the RTS7751R2D Basic Edition board, and works as a plugin for Lineo's uLinux Elite development environment.

The RTS7751R2D board features seven layers of video overlay, alpha blends in hardware, and 2D acceleration. It also features video capture with YUV input, for direct MPEG decoder connections. The silent, passively cooled board requires no heat sinks. It targets graphical, embedded consumer electronics applications.
The RTS7751R2D board is powered by Renesas's SH7751R, a PCI-equipped SoC (system-on-chip) with a 240MHz SH4 core and 120MHz external memory bus. It has 64MB of SDRAM, and 1, 32, or 64MB of Flash. Optional components include a 6.4-inch VGA (640 x 480) LCD display, 10.4-inch SVGA (800 x 600) LCD touchscreen, a sound card option, and a CompactFlash card preinstalled with Lineo's uLinux OS.
Lineo's uLinux Elite
Lineo's uLinux Elite (embedded Linux integration tools and environment) is a graphical cross-target development environment for Linux and Windows hosts. It supports various target boards through BSP plugins, and includes 37 basic, verified packages necessary for embedded Linux development, such as glibc and busybox.
Lineo currently offers a Linux 2.4-based BSP for the board, and has contributed patches for the SH7751R SoC to the CELF Linux patch collection.
Lineo says its 2.4-based BSP for the board places the most importance on stability, for use in embedded systems. The new 2.6-based BSP will use a 2.6.8.1 kernel, and bring enhanced networking capabilities, device drivers, and added security, the company says.
Availability
uLinux Elite 2.6 for RTS7751R2D Basic Edition will ship next month, priced at 600,000 Japanese Yen (about $5,600), or 300,000 Japanese Yen (about $2,800) for the BSP alone.
Lineo also offers a JTAG and ICE (in-circuit emulator) debugger for its uLinux Elite system.
