Linux-based industrial controller line gains iptables, SNMP

Sixnet is offering new security and management add-ons for its IPm line of distributed data acquisition and industrial controller devices. The add-ons include a firewall based on Linux iptables and a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) module.

Specifically, the new add-ons work with Sixnet's VersaTRAK IPm Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), its IPm Open DCS Controller, its I/O Controller (OEM Linux model), and its new EtherTRAK Dual Ethernet Gateway. They require the latest versions of Sixnet's I/O Tool Kit (v2.2) and IPm Firmware (v1.5), which are available at no charge.

Sixnet says its new IP Security Protection add-on allows users to protect their controller/RTU from unauthorized access. A Security Rules Wizard in Sixnet's I/O Tool Kit is used to define rules that restrict access (incoming or outgoing) based upon IP address, IP ports, or any other capability of the iptables Linux application.

The SNMP add-on provides network management information from the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agents embedded in IPm controllers and RTUs. These agents can be configured using a Rules Wizard in the I/O Tool Kit.

Both add-ons require licenses from from Sixnet when used with IPm units. Once the license for the add-on has been purchased, users simply “unlock” the new capability using their I/O Tool Kit, according to Sixnet.
