Linux mobile phone software and services provider Azingo (formerly Celunite) has hired a Motorola mobile-devices exec to lead its engineering operations. As VP of engineering, Ravi Gopalakrishnan (pictured at left) will oversee expansion of Azingo's mobile Linux engineering team.

Azingo changed its name from Celunite earlier this month, and then followed up with the announcement that the Linux Mobile (LiMo) Foundation had selected key portions of its Linux-based Azingo Mobile middleware and applications stacks for use in its common integration environment (CIE) for standardized mobile phones. Specific Azingo components selected for inclusion include a software phone emulator, testing and bug tracking tools, and software management tools.

Formerly director of mobile devices for Motorola Japan, Gopalakrishnan was a key player in developing the MotoRazr handset, Azingo said. In his new role, Gopalakrishnan is tasked with defining and implementing web-enabled mobile applications, developing comprehensive mobile Linux middleware, and directing platform integration, qualification, and delivery processes.

A 15-year veteran of the wireless industry, Gopalakrishnan previously held a variety of management positions at Motorola, including director of Motorola Mobile Devices in the U.S. He holds a masters of science in Physics from IIT Kanput, a masters of science in Computer Engineering from IISc in Bangalore, and a masters of business administration from the University of Chicago.

Stated Azingo CEO Mahesh Veerina, “Ravi's combination of engineering depth and wireless industry experience will help us scale our organization and accelerate our platform's commercial development.”

In August, Celunite hired another Motorola Japan exec tied to the MotoRazr line, which includes the Linux-based Razr V8. Tom Okada, formerly Motorola's director of Japanese operations and the leader of the MotoRazr launch team, is now Azingo's VP of sales and business development.
