Linux thin clients gain managability

Mar 10, 2008 — by Eric Brown — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 4 views

Igel has released an update to its remote management software for coordinating its Linux-compatible thin clients. Igel's Remote Management Suite (RMS) 2.07 is said to offer easier installation via a new Java database, as well as enhanced Microsoft Active Directory support.

RMS 2.07's built-in Java database enables a one-click install procedure, says Igel, reducing the cost and complexity of setting up thin clients. An upgrade to the software's Active Directory support is said to enable IT managers to assign administrative rights to groups that are managed via Active Directory, providing automatic updates within RMS. The new version can also automatically detect disconnected thin clients, says the company.

For larger, more complex networks, Igel sells a similar application called Remote Suite Manager. It offers “failsafe” capabilities for high availability, says the company, as well as support for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and IBM DB2.

Stated Stephen Yeo, Igel's worldwide strategic marketing director, “With the integrated database in this latest version of Igel's Remote Management Suite, you can manage thousands of thin clients in less than 15 minutes, after just one mouse click.”

Over the last year, Igel has upgraded its various thin clients with VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) virtualization capability, smartcard authentication, and Philips SpeechMagic voice recognition technology.

Availability

Remote Management Suite 2.07 is available now for download at Igel's customer service page, and more information is available on RMS here.
