LinuxMall.com: VMELinux Gets Embed

Apr 24, 2000 — by Rick Lehrbaum — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

Greta Durr has written an interesting and informative article about the VMELinux Project — whose goal is “to make Linux a sensible alternative for embedded VMEbus applications” — and about the project's founder, electrical engineer John Huggins. Greta writes . . .

“VMELinux founder and electrical engineer John Huggins has been busy at work, bridging the gap for system integrators and developers looking to use Linux in embedded environments, and he's keeping his day job.”

“Huggins embarked on his fairly obscure mission in 1998, working a contract job for the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington D.C. 'I was in desperate need of something,' he said. 'I was up against the wall.' So, in the tradition of engineering, Huggins made his own driver. 'I developed it for my own needs.' ”

“Experience with VME (Versa Module Eurocard) board design and system integration has landed him another endeavor. 'I currently work on a project that uses a combination 6U/9U VMEcage, an off-the-shelf Pentium VMEbus processor running Linux, and custom 9U VMEboards,' Huggins said. 'I started the VMELinux Project after team development of the first Universe PCI-VME bridge driver as a way to share and promote the use of Linux in VMEbus embedded systems.' ”

“The VMELinux driver is the first result of his efforts.”
