Microsoft’s smartphone strategy could succeed, analyst says
May 11, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsWindowsForDevices.com has published an interesting market reseach summary finding suggesting that Microsoft's smartphone strategy may yet succeed, despite tiny marketshare figures for smartphone versions of Windows CE. The finding argues that smartphones are a strategic part of Microsoft's .NET initiative, and should be evaluated in that context.
The report, from Research and Markets Ltd., suggests that smartphones, for Microsoft, are primarily a way of creating “consumers” of .NET content and services, thereby creating a demand for .NET development tools and related offerings. Even a small share of the smartphone market, which according to the report is expected to grow dramatically, could enable Microsoft's smartphones to serve as a “revenue multiplier” for its .NET related products.
