MontaVista is the developer of the Hard Hat Linux operating system for embedded applications.
The MontaVista agreement represents the first step of Insignia's strategy to make the Jeode platform the premier Java solution for Linux-based Internet appliances and embedded devices. Insignia intends to make additional announcements supporting this strategy in the weeks ahead.
“MontaVista is a true embedded Linux pioneer and their founder, Jim Ready, is a legend in the real-time embedded business,” said Ron Workman, senior vice president of marketing for Insignia Solutions. “We are very pleased they have selected the Jeode platform to distribute to the fast-growing market for Linux-based Internet appliances and embedded systems.”
“We look forward to working with Insignia to introduce their Jeode platform to our embedded Linux developers,” said Ready, MontaVista's president and chief executive officer. “We're especially impressed with the Jeode platform's fully-preemptible dynamic compilation and garbage collection technology. These capabilities should be very attractive to developers that require a solution that yields high performance and predictable behavior in their real-time embedded applications.”
The Linux Market
According to International Data Corp. (IDC), Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, growing more than 190 percent in that year alone and capturing more than 15.8 percent of the market segment for server operating systems. IDC research also predicts that by 2002, more than 55 million handheld and notebook-style Internet appliance devices will be shipped, and that by 2005, shipments of these appliances will exceed shipments of PCs.
