MontaVista boasts of top NEP customers

MontaVista has announced that six well-known network equipment providers (NEPs) use the telecom-specific version of MontaVista Linux. Alcatel, Agilent UK, Ericsson, NEC, Nokia, and Samsung are all active users of MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), the company says, along with three other well-known NEPs unnamed in the announcement.

According to MontaVista, CGE is a COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) operating system that enhances Linux based on the Open Source Development Lab's (OSDL's) Carrier Grade Linux Specification. CGE targets edge and core telecommunications devices, including convergent voice/IP network devices such as soft switches, SGSN (serving GPRS support node), GGSN (gateway GPRS support node), RNC (radio network controller), and voice over IP (VoIP) gateways.

Analyst Stacey Quandt of Quandt Analytics commented, “The availability of an open source carrier-class Linux platform that addresses the requirements of the telecommunications industry is a major step that will drive innovation in the sector.”

OSDL CEL Stuart Cohen said, “OSDL is delighted to see growing evidence of the momentum towards a standards-based platform.”

NEC Sr. General Manager Takatoshi Numasato said, “We selected this new platform that is based on open standards to shorten the development time and reduce total costs.”

Alcatel Mobile Solutions President Jean-Michel Cornille said, “For nearly two years, Alcatel has been working together with MontaVista Software in order to provide operators with a reliable and open platform enabling powerful fixed, mobile and converged end-user centric applications.”
