MontaVista establishes Korea office, notes growth of embedded Linux in region

The office will market and support the full range of MontaVista's embedded Linux products, and is under the direction of S. Y. Kwon, general manager for MontaVista Korea. The new office in Korea adds to the company's presence in the Asia Pacific region, which already spans Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan, and… India, MontaVista said.
Market research shows strong interest in using embedded Linux among developers in the Asia Pacific, according market data supplied by MontaVista. Research firm Venture Development Corporation (VDC) reports that the region currently accounts for more than a third of the global market for embedded Linux, with demand growing at an annual rate of 22 percent over the next five years. Additionally, a recent Gartner Dataquest / EE Times survey on the use of real-time operating systems in embedded applications among developers in Asia concluded that the top three OSes are currently VxWorks (at 30.6%), Windows CE (at 22.8%), and Linux (at 21.4%), with Linux expected to surpass Windows CE soon.
“The telecommunications and consumer electronics industries in Korea are accelerating their migration of software platforms from proprietary OSes to Linux,” noted MontaVista's Kwon. “Already, leading companies such as Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. are using MontaVista Linux for next-generation products..”
