Multi-core Intel platform combines Linux, OS-9

Feb 15, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 views

RadiSys is shipping a toolkit that lets developers combine Linux with its OS-9 RTOS (real-time OS), in embedded systems based on RadiSys boards and Intel Core 2 Duo processors. The MultiCore Development Kit includes the VLX-NI platform virtualization product from VirtualLogix.

The Development Kit appears to target RadiSys's CE945GM, the newest model in its “Procelerant” line of COM Express embedded computer modules. The CE945GM supports the Core 2 Duo Pentium M L7400 and T2500, among other Intel chips. Based on Intel's 945GM northbridge and ICH7M “Digital Home Controller Hub” southbridge, the module features gigabit Ethernet on a 1x PCIe lane, a 16x PCI slot, and lots of multimedia I/O. It is is available in an extended temperature version for military and aerospace applications.

The Development Kit comes with VirtualLogix's VLX-NI (network infrastructure) product, along with a version of RadiSys's OS-9 capable of running alongside Linux on the virtualized platform provided by VLX-NI.

RadiSys touts OS-9 as a Unix-like RTOS that is fast, reliable, and secure. It is said to support dynamic component loading, and to comply with multiple standards, simplifying the porting of compliant applications from platforms such as Linux. It supports a wide variety of processor architectures, scales to systems large and small, and is supported by engineers via email, phone, and chat, according to the company.

Wade Clowes, VP of the commercial market for RadiSys, says that “[the Kit] enables designers to improve performance, reduce power consumption, and consolidate multiple single core designs.”

Availability

The Multicore Development Kit is available now from RadiSys. However, RadiSys does not yet appear to have shipped any Procelerant COM Express boards based on Intel Core 2 Duo processors.
