Network appliance platform runs Linux

Axiomtek is shipping a 1U rack-mountable network appliance platform targeting small- and medium-sized businesses. The NA-820 provides seven gigabit Ethernet ports, supports Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and is available with support for Linux 2.4 and 2.6, according to the company.

The NA-820 comes with seven gigabit Ethernet ports interfaced via PCI-Express, according to Axiomtek. The device supports two groups of LAN by-pass function through watchdog timer and GPIO pin definitions. The system's Intel 82573 LAN chips support fail-over, load-sharing, and load-balancing functions.

The system provides four USB 2.0 ports — two on the front panel, and two internally on pin headers. An RS232 DB9 console port is also available on the front panel; the BIOS can be be redirected to the console port for headless operation, the company says.

The system accommodates a 2.5-inch IDE or SATA hard drive, as well as CompactFlash. A 32-bit, 33 MHz Mini PCI slot allows for system expansion.

The NA-820 is based on Axiomtek's SBC8A820 SBC (single-board computer). The SBC provides an LGA775 CPU socket, which supports Pentium 4, Pentium D, and Core 2 duo processors, and incorporates a 945G+ICH7R chipset. Two DDR2 DIMM sockets support up to 4 GB of unbuffered non-ECC memory.

Other features of the 8-layer SBC8A820 SBC, according to Axiomtek, include:

In addition to Linux 2.4 and 2.6, the NA-820 appliance and its internal SBC8A820 also support Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded.

Both the NA-820 network appliance platform and the SBC8A820 SBC are immediately available, according to Axiomtek Pricing was not disclosed.
