A pair of U.S. universities are sponsoring a one-day conference on mobile device technology next month. Sponsored by Cal Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon, “The Mobile Future” will feature embedded and telecom industry leaders speaking individually and on panels about mobile device business, technology, and globalization, among other topics.

To be held Apr. 22 in Santa Clara, the first-year event is geared toward students and higher-education academicians, as well as investors, engineers, and executives, organizers said. About 300 attendees are expected, along with 25 panelists representing 25 different companies. Embedded Linux savvy panelists include John Bruggeman of Wind River, Christy Wyatt of Motorola, and Didier Diaz of Access, among others.

Morning sessions are organized around the heady strategic topic of how new mobile devices, applications, and services will “change the way people work, play, and relate.” Practical considerations will be held at bay until the afternoon sessions, when things get down to the tactical nitty gritty of, “How can we turn the vision into reality?”

Registration is going for $120 until April 7, when the ante ups to $200. More details may be available here.
