New JVM support for Embedded Linux
Jun 4, 2001 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 2 viewsSan Francisco, CA; JavaOne — (press release excerpt) — esmertec, inc. announced the support of its Jbed product line on MontaVista's Hard Hat Linux operating system for embedded systems. The new release of the Jbed Virtual Machine and Libraries for embedded Linux runs with the Yopy Linux PDA powered by the StrongARM SA-1110 microprocessor.
“Java is becoming more and more popular as the language of choice for embedded systems programming on Linux,” says Hansruedi Heeb, esmertec's CEO, “but so far Java Virtual Machines on Linux were either very slow or they had unacceptably large memory footprints. Jbed is the only JVM that is both fast and small.”
esmertec's embedded Linux release includes the same feature-rich functionality currently available in the Jbed Micro Edition CLDC and the Jbed RTOS Package (excluding the real-time capabilities). Both products are compiling JVMs that always execute at full native speed but they only use a memory footprint similar to a simple interpretive JVM.
Jbed with embedded Linux OS support will be available in August 2001.
