New single-chip TV-tuners support handheld devices

Nov 12, 2002 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Tokyo — A new single-chip TV-tuner module from Japan is another indication of just how much functionality is available for integration into PDAs and other small devices. However, the tuner currently handles only conventional terrestrial Japanese signals, not the fuzzier NTSC emissions cluttering the U.S. airways.

Sony is, in fact, releasing two modules: the BTF-ZJ401 and the BTF-ZJ411. The former measures 1.0 x 0.8 x 0.1 in. (or about the same as a standard 80-yen postage stamp, according to Sony). It dissipates 800mW. The BTF-ZJ411 is slightly larger — measuring 1.6 x 0.9 x 0.1 in. — and can also handle stereo and multi-channel audio broadcasts.

Samples of the new tuner module will be available in Q1 of 2003.
