New XScale chips target faster, smaller, lighter PDAs

Mar 25, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 13 views

Intel announced three new processors targeting PDAs, all based on the company's popular XScale processor architecture. The new processors offer the latest in microprocessor packaging and stacking techniques and feature higher performance along with reduced power consumption, the company said.

The announced chips include two additions to the PXA26x family, both available in 200 MHz, 300 MHz, 400 MHz speeds: the PXA263 processor, which is referred to as the “first stacked processor” for PDAs; and the PXA260 processor, which is said to provide a pin-compatible upgrade for earlier designs based on PXA26x processors. The third processor, the 400 MHz PXA255, a replacement for the PXA250 processor, is said to offer enhanced performance and extended battery life.

Full specifications of the new processors are available here.

Intel said the new PXA263 and PXA260 are currently sampling, with production quantities expected by mid-2003, and production quantities of the PXA255 are available now. The PXA263 will be priced at around $42 (USD) and the PXA260 will be around $23 (both prices represent 200 MHz speed versions, in 10,000 unit quantities). Pricing for the PXA255 was not indicated.
