[updated June 27, 2001] Tempe, AZ — (press release excerpt) — DevelopOnline has launched a software development contest which runs from today through August 29 of this year. 15 winners will each receive a $1,000.00 check and international recognition. A grand prize of $10,000.00 will also be awarded. The prize announcements will be made public at CMP's Embedded Systems Conference in Boston on September 6, 2001. Winning applications will be showcased on the DevelopOnline website.

Desirable applications are new and original software for Internet appliances, handheld devices, set-top boxes, and other intelligent connected devices. Original application software must be created using a modular design from which the building blocks may be re-used.

Contestants will develop their applications on state-of-the-art processor platforms enabled by DevelopOnline's advanced web technology. This cutting-edge technology allows contestants to write, compile, run and debug their programs on real hardware online. All qualified contestants receive 10 free hours of time on DevelopOnline's online reference platforms to run and debug their entries.

According to DevelopOnline's CEO, Alan Steinberg, this is the first time that a software development contest for embedded applications will be conducted entirely over the Web. “Contestants will develop on difficult-to-obtain hardware reference platforms from IBM, Intel, and STMicroelectronics,” said Steinberg. “This is the first time software developers will have instant access from their desktops to reference application platforms designed by the world's leading processor companies. We provide a high-tech playground and a toy box full of all the building blocks the contestants will need to develop. We draw from the biggest names in the electronics and software industry so we can offer everything from customizable platforms, operating systems, development software, and simulation tools. We're excited about being able to demonstrate this new technology that may result in a 10X improvement in time-to-market.”
