Opera adds IRC chat, UI enhancements to Linux browser
May 12, 2004 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsOpera Software has added an IRC-compatible chat client and user interface (UI) improvements to its browser, which now includes an advanced email client, newsreader, and more in a single application with a footprint under 3.5MB. The Opera browser supports Linux, embedded Linux, and many other popular embedded and non-embedded platforms.
According to Opera, Opera 7.50 includes an especially rich email client, with an integrated contact database, fast text search, filtering, spellchecking, and RSS feed support.
Opera is free, but shows Google Ad-Words based on page content unless registered. Registration costs $40, including six months of Opera Web Mail Premium.
Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner said, “Internet users who are looking for something faster, packed with fun features and innovations that will also make them more efficient when online, will find Opera a thrilling experience.”
Opera is available with optimizations for small and medium size screens, and is the default browser in the newest Zaurus model PDA from Sharp. Opera recently gained support for Dynamic HTML and WAP. It supports kiosk mode for use in walled garden and other embedded projects.
