Opera revs Windows browser, offers betas for Solaris, FreeBSD, Linux
Sep 2, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsOpera Software has released beta versions of its Opera browser for Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris, claiming speed increases and more parity across platforms.
The version 7.20 beta release represents the first availability of the 7-series on either Solaris or FreeBSD, and follows the (non-beta) release of Opera 7.20 for Windows three days ago.
Reduced pricing is available for the beta versions: $29 buys an unsupported copy of the browser and six months of Opera mail. It includes a free upgrade when the supported version ships, and access to the help database at that time.
Beta versions are best used by experienced users, according to Opera, and installed in separate directories.
Opera claims its browser is the “only major commercial player continuing to push browser development on these platforms” in the wake of Netscape developer layoffs at AOL.
