Timesys has published a new 2.6.24 main line Linux kernel, and a new reference distribution for the Intel/Marvell PXA270. The Linux development publishers have also updated their website with a new look and feel, and posted a LinuxLink Radio episode on inter-process communication.

The popular PXA270 processor appears to be everywhere these days, including the Gumstix Verdex, pictured at left. The PXA270 was launched by Intel in 2004 under the code name “Bulverde,” and is now owned and manufactured by Marvell.

The new Timesys reference distribution for the PXA270 is based on Linux 2.6.23, and includes a root filesystem cross-compiled using toolchains based on gcc 4.2 and binutils 2.17.50. The distribution includes integrated support for serial, Ethernet, flash, and framebuffer devices.

The new 2.6.24 Linux Kernel release from kernel.org includes enhancements to memory, scheduling, and networking functions, plus improved support for embedded platforms, including AMCC. Timesys has only posted the standard kernel — reference distributions optimized for specific processors will be available in the coming weeks, it said.
