Commercial real-time Linux distributor FSMLabs has hired former Infineon Technologies software evangelist Jason Whitmire as managing director of a newly created EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Asia) office. Whitmire could help FSMLabs reach new operating systems markets for mobile phones and telecom infrastructure products.

FSMLabs previously collaborated with Infineon on a single-core Linux phone reference design touted as the world's first functional “single-core” Linux phone design.

Infineon is a vendor of chips and silicon IP (intellectual property) targeting automotive, industrial, and communications applications. However, Whitmire helped found and build Infineon's software business, promoting its software technologies to silicon vendors, system manufacturers, and device makers worldwide. Infineon's software business grew to $95 million in annual sales during Whitmire's tenure, according to FSMLabs.

Whitmire also previously served as director of product management at Group3G UMTS GmbH, director of business development at Telegate AG, and head of VAS projects at Telecom Italia Mobile.

CEO Victor Yodaiken stated, “[Jason's] experience in the wireless industry is a crucial asset to FSMLabs' next phase of growth.”

Whitmire stated, “RTLinux has changed the face of computing for the wireless simulation, aerospace, industrial control, financial services, and robotics markets.”

Telecommunications — and especially wireless infrastructure — appears to be a growing focus for FSMLabs. The company claimed the first Carrier Grade Linux 3.2 registration, and has recently been promoting its real-time and virtualization products on multi-core AMD-based systems targeting the telecom infrastructure market.

FSMLabs also appears to be focused on the aerospace and defense market, raving recently inked a consulting agreement with A&D industry vet Dr. C. Douglass Locke.
