Real-time embedded Linux vendor FSMLabs has joined the partner program of database vendor MySQL AB. The companies will work together to expand their telecom-specific consulting services around MySQL-powered software running on FSMLabs's hard real-time enabled Carrier Grade Linux and BSD distributions, FSMLabs says.

FSMLabs and MySQL are both known best for products developed outside the telecommunications market. However, the telecom industry's shift toward standard PC architectures has recently helped both companies tap the telecom market.

MySQL in 2003 announced it would work with Carrier Grade Linux pioneer MontaVista to validate MySQL for carrier-grade environments. FSMLabs unveiled its RTCore x86-64 Enhanced Carrier Grade Linux (E-CGL) distribution last June. Both companies now see significant product demand from telecom customers, according to FSMLabs.

FSMLabs said it decided to join the MySQL partner program in part because new capabilities in MySQL 5.0 and MySQL Cluster have “made it possible to scale databases horizontally without significantly increasing costs.” FSMLabs also said its real-time enabled Linux technology, combined with MySQL, allows customers to “configure highly scalable, very dense computing clusters with multiple processors, cores, and blade systems, performing at near hardware speeds for latency and determinism under heavy load.”

Larry Stefonic, senior VP of OEM sales at MySQL, stated, “With FSMLabs' technology, our customers can use their current Linux or BSD OS, such as Red Hat, SUSE, Fedora, NetBSD, FreeBSD, etc., with the added benefit of hard real-time determinism.”

Daniel Robbins, VP of platform engineering at FSMLabs, stated, “MySQL's certified software, production-level support, training and consulting services enable our customers to safely deploy open source database applications — at a fraction of the cost of proprietary database products.”

Terri Hall, VP of global alliances for AMD, stated, “FSMLabs' RTCore real-time scheduling technology combined with AMD Virtualization and AMD Direct Connect Architecture [enables customers to] consolidate their IT hardware deployments.”

Availability

No timeframe was announced for the availability of products or services combining offerings from FSMLabs and MySQL. However, FSMLabs says it will demonstrate MySQL alongside RTLinux at the Real-Time and Embedded Computing Conference (RTECC) on Jan. 25 in San Jose, Calif., where FSMLabs will participate in a panel discussion on device/enterprise convergence.

FSMLabs also plans to demonstrate MySQL at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona next month, it says.
