RTLinux to gain UML add-on
Jul 28, 2005 — by Henry Kingman — from the LinuxDevices Archive — viewsFSMLabs will ship in August an add-on for its real-time Linux and BSD OSes that enables integration with I-Logix's suite of model-driven development (MDD) tools for embedded systems. RTCore UML Bridge will allow joint customers to use I-Logix's Rhapsody toolsuite to produce real-time C and C++ source code for RTLinux and RTCoreBSD, FSMLabs says.
Rhapsody
I-Logix says its Rhapsody tools enable embedded systems developers to create devices from graphical models, which it says is more efficient than traditional document-based development. MDD facilitates code re-use and enables simulation and validation during all phases of development, the company says.
Rhapsody is based on two modeling languages — UML 2.0 and SysML. UML, a standard of the Object Management Group, can model application structure, behavior, and architecture, as well as business processes and data structures. It is the OMG's most commonly used standard, that organization says. For example, it was recently used by the Software Revolution to model the 2.6 Linux kernel (SVG plugin or browser support required to view the model).
SysML (systems modeling language) is an open source project aiming to create a visual modeling language for systems engineering applications. SysML's maintainers intend to submit SysML to the OMG in response to that organization's RFP (request for proposal) for a version of UML for systems engineering.
FSMLabs says I-Logix's Rhapsody toolsuite can help device developers using RTLinux and RTCoreBSD to realize significant quality improvements, in addition to saving time. Rhapsody, combined with RTCore and RTLinux, provides a development platform capable of addressing all phases of embedded development, the company says, including designing, prototyping, and deploying code on target systems. Final production code can be extracted directly from Rhapsody's graphical models, the companies say.
An April, 2004 report by EMF (Embedded Market Forecasters) found that UML 2.0 reduces embedded development times.
Availability
FSMLabs expects to ship RTCore UML Bridge in August as an add-on to its RTLinuxPro and RTCoreBSD development environments.
