Scalable embedded database available on embedded Linux 2.6

LynuxWorks has announced that Empress Embedded Database is now available for its BlueCat embedded Linux operating system. Empress V8.62 is a multi-platform, highly scalable real-time database, according to LynuxWorks, that targets image and voice management, networking, telecom, military, defense, process control, automotive, and data acquisition.

Venture Development Corp. (VDC) ranked Empress among the second tier of embedded database vendors in a 2003 study, along with (alphabetical order) Birdstep, Oracle, Poet Software (FastObjects), SleepyCat, and Times Ten.

According to LynuxWorks, Empress provides a small, fast, full-featured and maintenance-free DBMS (database management system) with APIs (application programming interfaces) for C, C++, SQL, ODBC, and JDBC. It supports “any data type,” Empress claims, and has a flexible configuration that enables it to scale from address books on mobile devices to large, sophisticated embedded systems.

“Developers are limited only by the system the application runs on,” said Empress VP Ivor Ladd.

BlueCat Linux, from LynuxWorks, is based on a 2.6-series Linux kernel.
