Server device deemed “best Linux-based product”

Apr 12, 2007 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 5 views

A small, ARM-based Linux server appliance has received a glowing review, to say the least, over at Linux.com. Excito's “Bubba” server makes running and managing a home server easy and fun, according to reviewer Joe Barr.

Bubba is a compact, fanless server appliance with an internal hard drive up to 500GB, a 200MHz ARM processor, and a fully customizable Debian Linux operating system. With a rated noise output of only 27dB, it is nearly silent, and it draws a maximum of 10 Watts running flat out. Additional technical details can be found in our earlier coverage.

Linux.com reviewer Joe Barr calls Bubba “the best Linux-based product I've tried” — lofty praise considering that Barr has worked in Linux compujournalism for as long as LinuxDevices editors can recall.

According to Barr, Bubba makes life better by handling torrent, http, and ftp downloads in the background. It improves messaging and communications by aggregating and backing up multiple email accounts, whether based on POP3 or IMAP. It serves USB printers to any PC on the LAN, via a user-friendly Web GUI. It streams music to iTunes-compatible (and also UPnP-compatible) players such as Banshee. Finally, it provides an easy-to-use, always-on network drive for backing up important information.

To top it off, re-flashing Bubba to repair a damaged system or recover from password loss is “easy,” Barr said. His full, glowing review is available here.
