Software for Intel Network Processor supports Linux

Des Moines, IA — (press release excerpt) — Microware Systems Corporation announced a turnkey LAN/WAN routing and forwarding software solution for the Intel IXP1200 Network Processor family and new Intel IXDP1200 Advanced Development Platform. Microware's IXP1200 support, which supports Embedded Linux based system applications, includes an OS-independent Microcode Solutions Library along with a set of associated development tools.

“This advanced product suite allows developers to design networking solutions that perform routing and forwarding functions at wire speeds,” said Curt Schwaderer, Microware director of network technologies. “IXP1200 Network Processors utilize microengines that are optimized for packet handling. Microware's solution is aimed at enhancing the performance of these microengines.”

Microware's solution provides a highly sophisticated integrated suite ideally suited for LAN/WAN access switching applications including edge routing, multi-service access switching, wireless base station control operations, DSLAM devices and other communications equipment designs based on 10/100/1000-Mbps Ethernet and ATM. The software runs on a StrongARM core, and performs control and management plane functions.

The Microware Microcode Solutions Library (MSL v1.1) capabilities include Fast/Gigabit Ethernet, wire speed routing and forwarding, IP over ATM, and AAL1, AAL2, and AAL5 for any operating system environment. The software product suite is available now and has been validated with OS-9 and Linux environments. Both were ported to the Intel IXDP1200 Advanced Development Platform by Microware. The OS-9 and Linux environments include an industry-standard IP stack and RIP/OSPF routing protocols. OS-9 adds a real-time environment, dynamic component hot-swap, high reliability, and a compiler optimized for the StrongARM instruction set.
