Sun tunes mobile JVM to XScale

Jun 10, 2003 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — views

Intel and Sun announced a collaboration to optimize Sun's CDLC (Connected Limited Device Configuration) “HotSpot Implementation” for Intel's XScale family processors. Sun will then provide optimized JVMs to manufacturers of mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs.

According to Sun, The CLDC HotSpot Implementation is a virtual machine that is highly optimized for devices with 16/32-bit RISC microprocessors (such as ARM-based processors) with as little as 192 KB of total available memory for the Java technology stack, and provides superior performance compared to the K Virtual Machine (KVM). In addition to complying with CLDC specs, the CLDC HotSpot Implementation includes patented functions resulting in faster application execution and more efficient resource management, Sun said.

A whitepaper on the HotSpot Implementation is available here.

The optimized Sun JVM is expected to be released during the coming quarter, with OEM handsets incorporating the optimizations available later this year, the companies said.
