Progeny Linux announced the launch of a subscription-based transition service for former Red Hat Linux subscribers, beginning January 1, 2004, to fill the void as Red Hat discontinues support for its older distributions. The service supports x86 machines running Red Hat 7.2, 7.3, and 8.0, with support for 9 starting May 1. Red Hat has said it is discontining maintenance and errata support for basic “Red Hat Linux” version 8 and earlier in Dec., 2003, and for Red Hat 9 in Apr. 2004.

Progeny's transition service delivers security notifications and updates through Progeny's Platform Services technology. Platform Services uses sophisticated application packaging, dependency checking, conflict resolution, and the Advanced Package Tool (apt) to enable users to safely apply security patches and, if desired, software updates that leverage the rapid evolution of open source projects.

Apt is a cornerstone of Debian Linux, a Linux distribution founded by Ian Murdoch, who later co-founded Progeny.

Progeny's Transition Service can also deliver updates using frontends from its delivery partners, which include Novell (Ximian Red Carpet Enterprise version 2.0) and Aduva (OnStage or Deployment Manager for Linux).

The subscription-based service costs $5 per machine per month, or $2,500 per month for an unlimited number of machines.
