Versatile gateway reference design comes with Linux

ADI Engineering is shipping a versatile hardware reference design targeting small-office wireless residential gateways with network attached storage and print server capabilities, security gateways with VPN termination, and VoIP (voice-over-IP) terminals. The IXDPG425, or “Monte Jade,” design is based on an Intel IXP425 network processor, and comes preinstalled with an evaluation version of Jungo's OpenRG Linux environment.

The Intel XScale IXP425 is “network processor” SoC (system-on-chip) that boasts three network processor engines. It targets “last-mile” applications, such as customer premises equipment.

ADI's development board for the IXP425 includes an Intel IXP425 clocked at 533MHz. It comes standard with 16MB of Flash and 32MB of SDRAM, and supports up to 32MB of Flash, and 128MB of SDRAM.

I/O ports include four 10/100 Ethernet LAN ports, and one 10/100 Ethernet WAN port. Third party WAN cards such as ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+ cards are supported through a Utopia (Universal Test and Operations PHY Interface to Asynchronous Transfer Mode) Level 2 mezzanine card connector. Two 32-bit, 33MHz mini-PCI Type III slots can house wireless cards. Additional I/O ports include: four POTS (plain old telephone service) ports supporting PSTN failover, two USB 2.0 host ports, one USB 1.1 device port, one RS-232 port, and a JTAG debugger and emulator interface.

On the software side, the Monte Jade comes pre-installed with an evaluation version of Jungo's Linux-based OpenRG operating system and software stack for residential gateways, small-office/home-office (SOHO) gateways, and small-medium business network devices. OpenRG is a mature software stack that has been used in many reference designs and products, including Linksys wireless access points.

Jungo's OpenRG stack includes 802.11 wireless software, a stateful packet-inspecting firewall, VPN (virtual private network) software, VoIP (voice-over-IP) software, ADSL (asynchronous digital subscriber line) software, and management software.

The Monte Jade design also includes RedBoot 1.92, and POST (power-on self-test) and diagnostics tools from Kozio.

ADI CTO Steve Yates said, “Our family of low-cost, turnkey OEM platforms based on Monte Jade for Wi-Fi, VoIP, and security applications offer [an] immediate production solution.”

List price for Monte Jade in single piece quantities is $995. Development kits can be purchased immediately and are available for shipment. ADI can also spin custom versions of the board.
