Global IP Solutions (GIPS) has ported and optimized its VoIP (voice-over-IP) signal processing stack to an Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) digital signal processor (DSP). The companies are demonstrating GIPS VoiceEngine Embedded on uClinux atop ADI's Blackfin BF537 development board, at the Spring VON Conference in San Jose, Calif. this week.

GIPS offers VoiceEngine in both Embedded and PC versions. The PC version targets VoIP softphone applications, while the Embedded version targets “CPU-based VoIP equipment such as hardware residential gateways and IP phones,” the company says. VoiceEngine customers reportedly include Nortel, Skype, WebEx, Yahoo! and AOL.

GIPS said the VoiceEngine stack handles “all necessary voice components for VoIP,” including echo cancellation. The stack is said to offer superior voice quality under adverse network conditions, and to support existing standards.

ADI describes its Blackfin BF537 as a 16/32-bit embedded processor that blends microcontroller (MCU) and digital signal processing (DSP) capabilities. The chip powers the company's recent ADSP-BF537 DSP “Stamp” development board, which comes with uClinux 2.6.x, and targets telematics, “infotainment” devices, and set-top box applications. Blackfin DSPs were also chosen recently for Asterisk's VoIP appliance.

Jerry McGuire, VP of DSPs at ADI, stated, “We can offer our customers a high-performance, high-quality VoIP voice solution that is ported, optimized, and ready to go.”

Gary Hermansen, CEO of GIPS, added, “GIPS media processing capabilities meet the highest requirements of VoIP equipment manufacturers.”
