Wind River Systems has taken yet another step toward embedded Linux, announcing it has joined the CE Linux Forum (CELF), an industry group focused on the advancement of Linux as an open source platform for consumer electronics devices.

Wind River joins embedded Linux specialists including Lineo Solutions, MontaVista, and TimeSys, as well as a multitude of device designers and chip makers, in endorsing CELF, which was launched in July, 2003 by a host of consumer electronic giants such as Sony, Philips, and Panasonic.

Wind River claims that a majority of the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers — including Philips, Samsung, and Motorola — have used its VxWorks proprietary real-time operating system in the past. As Linux gains momentum with consumer electronics manufacturers, Wind River says it will work with CELF to ensure that its products meet customer needs, “including the co-existence of VxWorks and Linux.”

“Wind River is proud to participate in CELF as a way to meet our customers' growing demand for Linux,” said Dave Fraser, senior vice president of products, Wind River.

“I see the membership as a solid move that will further establish Wind River in the embedded Linux market,” commented analyst Bill Claybrook of the Aberdeen Group.

Wind River will showcase its embedded technologies for consumer devices, including its debug solution for Linux, at the Consumer Electronics Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center January 8-11 in the South Hall, Meeting Room #20747.

Today's announcement follows on the heels of a string of Linux related announcements from Wind River.
