Empower Technologies has appointed Wipro as the authorized service provider and system integrator for its hardware/software Linux development kit for a Texas Instruments (TI) SoC. Wipro will provide third party development and support services to customers of Empower's LDK5910, based on TI's OMAP5910 dual-core RISC/DSP chip.

According to the terms of the deal, Wipro will collect a portion of LDK5910 licensing fees if it can help clients use the kit to develop products that ship in commercial quantities, Empower says.

The LDK5910 includes a hardware development board based on the TI OMAP5910 along with Empower's “LEOs” Linux OS and toolchain, and enables developers to begin writing OMAP-based applications within one hour of setup, according to the Empower.

Empower launched the LDK5910 in May of this year, shortly after joining TI's DSP third party network, and opening a US office. Empower is based in British Columbia, Canada.

Empower said last fall that it would ship a PowerPlay 1x PDA based on the OMAP5910 last year, but that device seems to be delayed. The currently available PowerPlay V model is based on a Empower's LinuxDA OS running on Palm-compatible hardware.

India-based Wipro is among the largest global IT services and contract engineering firms. It also supports Wind River's embedded Linux tools and development kits, after partnering with Wind River this May.

Empower CEO Paul Leung said, “This partnership is a validation of our Linux [based] embedded operating software for TI OMAP5910 and its hardware development platform. This is a first major step in the right direction to make LEOs and LDK5910 the preferred embedded computing platform for the major developers in the world.”

Walter Ortmuller, general manager of Wipro's nearshore development center for European technology business, said, “This engagement will strengthen Wipro's resolve to deliver solutions on the LinuxDA Embedded OS for TI's OMAP5910 dual core processor [and give] Wipro exposure to Empower's and TI's client base.”
