10.1-inch tablet runs Android 2.2 on Tegra 250

Dec 27, 2010 — by LinuxDevices Staff — from the LinuxDevices Archive — 1 views

Onkyo announced an Android 2.2-based tablet that comes with a 1GHz Tegra 250 processor. The TA117 offers 512MB or 1GB of RAM, 8GB or 16GB of flash storage, a 10.1-inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel camera.

Apparently anticipating the crush of Android tablets that will appear at next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Onkyo chose today to out its 10.1-inch tablet, featuring a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 250 running Android 2.2 ("Froyo"). This vendor has a history of reselling OEM devices from other manufacturers (such as Gigabyte and Sotec), so we're not surprised to note that the device strongly resembles ViewSonic's G-Tablet, which was announced last September and went on sale earlier this month.

Onkyo's TA117 …

Not only does the Onkyo TA117 offer the same processor and 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600 pixel screen as the Viewsonic G-Tablet, it also sports identically placed buttons to the right of the screen and — the clincher — is also said to have the same measurements: a 10.5 x 6.8-inch footprint. ViewSonic and Onkyo also both cite a 3,6050mAh battery.

Onkyo offers the device with either 512MB of 1GB of RAM and 8GB or 16GB of flash storage. Like the ViewSonic G-Tablet, the TA117 is also said to have a microSD slot, USB 2.0 host and slave ports, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack.

… and the similar ViewSonic G-Tablet released earlier this month

Again like the ViewSonic entry, an optional dock (right) is said to include an HDMI port for HD video streaming, another USB port, and a headphone jack. There's no sign of 3G, but both 802.11b/g/n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1 are present, according to Onkyo.

Further information

It's frankly hard to tell from Onkyo's product page for the TA117 or the Japanese-language PDF the company uses to serve up most product details, but it would appear that like its ViewSonic cousin, the TA118 does not ship with an Android Market client on board. As far as we're aware, no information was provided regarding pricing or availability.
