Aewin announced what it claims is the world's first fanless network security appliance built on AMD's G-series processors — in this case, the headless, dual-core 1GHz T24L or 1.4GHz T48L models. The SCB-6977 offers up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, PCI Express and Mini PCI Express expansion, CompactFlash and 2.5-inch storage, four or six gigabit Ethernet ports, and dual USB 2.0 ports, says the company.

The SCB-6977 does indeed appear to be the first fanless networking appliance equipped with an AMD G-Series processor. Like last year's Aewin SCB-6972, it's an entry level networking appliance, but instead of using a Via Nano processor, the SCB-6977 moves to the G-Series T24L. One of AMD's lowest powered G-Series devices, the processor is limited to a 1GHz clock rate but has a TDP of just five Watts.

Although the data sheet makes no mention of it, Aewin's announcement says the SCB-6977 also supports a dual-core T48L. This is the fastest of the three "headless" G-Series variants, all of which omit the onboard ATI graphics processor unit (GPU) found on the T24L and most other G-Series processors. Clocked at up to 1.4GHz, the T48L has an 18-Watt TDP, the same as the GPU-enabled, 1.4GHz T48N.

The SCB-6977 shares the same 9.1 x 6 x 1.7 chassis as the SCB-6972, but varies on features. It supports up to 4GB of DDR3 memory instead of just 2GB of DDR2 on the SCB-6972, and provides a PCI Express (PCIe) slot in addition to a mini-PCIe socket for greater expansion. Like the earlier model, it features both a 2.5-inch HDD bay and a CompactFlash socket, according to Aewin.

The appliance offers six gigabit Ethernet copper ports instead of five, and offers one pair with LAN bypass, but it appears to lack the earlier model's WAN-switch expansion option. A four-port version is also available, says the company. Each Ethernet interface offers LED indicators for activity and transfer rate status.

Like the SCB-6972, the SCB-6977 provides dual USB 2.0 ports, but the earlier two additional internal USB interfaces aren't mentioned this time around. As before, a console serial port is available for local system management, maintenance, and diagnostics, and GPIO is provided as well, says Aewin.
