[Updated Jun. 26. 2003] — While this obviously is not an Embedded Linux news item, it's useful to keep an eye on “the competition.” Microsoft's mobile devices group had a busy day Monday, unveiling new software and a new Windows brand. In conjunction with the release of the latest version of Pocket PC, which was expected to be called “Pocket PC 2003,” Microsoft unveiled a new branding… (more…)
Abstract
The Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS) is a small, low-budget amateur aerospace group. PSAS is currently developing medium-sized sub-orbital rockets with the eventual goal of inserting nanosatellites (satellites that weigh less than 10 kg) into orbit. Because achieving orbit requires a navigation system able to guide the rocket along an orbital trajectory, PSAS is pioneering an… (more…)
This lengthy essay at Linux Journal describes Ian Lance Taylor's recent visit to SCO to discuss their claim that Linux infringes on its intellectual property rights. Though he can't give specifics, Taylor got to see a portion of the UNIX code SCO claims found its way into Linux — and he wasn't impressed. (more…)
According to a mobile handset market forecast just published by the Probe Group, the mobile handset embedded operating system market will be led by Symbian, followed by Microsoft. Probe's research projects Symbian and Microsoft to lead all other OS vendors with 5% and 2.5% of the global market, respectively, by 2007. (more…)
The original Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 stored PIM (personal information management) data in an XML format. Developers found this great, because they could get at the data from within their own applications by simply parsing the XML. Now, the new Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 (and ROM 3.10 update for the SL-5500) have replaced the XML format with “DTM” — the DaTa Manager engine. (more…)

OSDL and SD Times released the results of a joint survey on the use of Linux in corporations this week. The survey of 8,000 SD Times readers, mostly senior managers at corporations with more than 1,000 employees, showed broad and deep use of Linux in IT shops even though only a third of the companies had adopted the open source operating system as a corporate standard computing platform. In this technical article from Embedded Systems Programming magazine, embedded developer Niall Murphy offers his thoughts on when it makes sense to use embedded Linux in a project, and when it might not. Murphy comments that it probably isn't worth the effort to port Linux to custom embedded systems that don't require networking and storage, but that for many projects, especially those based on… (more…)
