Embedded Linux RTOS, database vendors partner on dev kit

In-memory database vendor McObject and embedded Linux OS and tools provider Sysgo have partnered on a development package targeting data-intensive industrial applications. The package includes McObject's eXtremeDB database for x86, reference applications, and Sysgo's ELinOS Basic Toolbox. (more…)

Free videoconferencing/VoIP app achieves 1st major release

GnomeMeeting.org has released a 1.0 version of its H.323 compatible videoconferencing and VOIP/IP-telephony application, following three years of development. In conjunction with its first major release number, the organization has begun accepting donations. GnomeMeeting 1.0 enables audio and video calls to remote users with H.323 hardware or software, such as Microsoft Netmeeting. (more…)

Linux surging in telecom, industrial automation

Venture Development Corporation (VDC) has released summary findings from studies examining the use of commercial operating systems and development tools in the telecommunications and industrial automation markets. The reports find Linux “making inroads” in telecom, and “expected to increase rapidly” in industrial automation. (more…)

Cross-platform GUI tools available for Familiar Linux, GPE

Dr. Robert Roebling of the wxEmbedded project reports progress toward bringing wxWidgets to Familiar, a Linux distribution mainly for the HP/Compaq iPAQ PDA. wxWidgets, formerly wxWindows, is an open source framework for multi-platform user interface development that relies on each platform's native widget set, preserving a native look and feel. Device Profile: Embedded Linux parking payment stations

The Canadian Society that manages street parking and public parking lots for the City of Montreal is planning to roll out 500 to 800 wireless, solar-powered parking payment stations based on embedded Linux. Each station replaces about 12 traditional parking meters, adding convenience features for drivers, meter maids, and city parking officials alike, according to 8D Technologies of Quebec, which worked… (more…)

Linux wireless networking overview

The article covers WLAN, Bluetooth, GPRS, GSM, and IrDA, and includes a review of Intersil's PRISM-based WLAN card showing how it interoperates with various components of a Linux operating system (PCMCIA, network devices, and protocol layers). Connected Home reviews the Zaurus SL-5600 Linux PDA

Connected Home has published a review of the Linux based Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 PDA that praises the device for its ease of use and Windows compatibility, but criticizes much of the device's software, saying it offers less control than competing PDAs. (more…)
