Linux PDA framework project preps next major release, invites testers

The Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (Opie) project has released a developer preview release in hopes of attracting testers for a pending stable release. The Opie 1.1.3 release previews a “vastly improved” version of the free graphical application environment for Linux handhelds and webpads, project leaders say. (more…)

Telecom equipment vendor Giga Stream says it uses IP Infusion's ZebOS Advanced Routing Suite (ARS) in a unique embedded Linux based “Universal Navigation Switch” (UNS) that integrates voice, data, and radio access to support seamless subscriber roaming between Radio Access Networks (RANs) and Wireless LANs. Distinctive Devices says it has received a $3.2 million dollar purchase order for embedded Linux based set-top boxes (STBs) that it calls “representative” of other deals. Italian digital TV vendor Goldtop will buy the devices and resell them into both terrestrial and satellite-based digital television markets. (more…)

IDC: Worldwide handheld device shipments decline 12% from previous year

The worldwide market for handheld devices declined in the first quarter of 2004 due to seasonally sluggish demand and vendor refocusing, according to market analyst IDC's “Worldwide Handheld QView.” Device shipments decreased 11.7 percent year-on-year in 1Q04, and dropped sequentially 33.1 percent to 2.2 million units. Metrowerks tool supports entire embedded Linux dev cycle
