MontaVista hires former Cobalt Networks marketing VP

MontaVista has hired former Cobalt Networks Vice President of Marketing Kelly Herrell as the company's new senior vice president of strategic operations. In this role, Mr. Herrell will guide corporate business strategy and “operationalize” growth opportunities, according to MontaVista.

Opera adds IRC chat, UI enhancements to Linux browser

Opera Software has added an IRC-compatible chat client and user interface (UI) improvements to its browser, which now includes an advanced email client, newsreader, and more in a single application with a footprint under 3.5MB. Microsoft’s smartphone strategy could succeed, analyst says

WindowsForDevices.com has published an interesting market reseach summary finding suggesting that Microsoft's smartphone strategy may yet succeed, despite tiny marketshare figures for smartphone versions of Windows CE. The finding argues that smartphones are a strategic part of Microsoft's .NET initiative, and should be evaluated in that context. (more…)

PC/104-Plus SBC with Transmeta 5500 runs embedded Linux

Kontron claims to have created the first PC/104-Plus CPU module based on Transmeta's Crusoe TM5500 processor. The MOPSlcdTM CPU module exhibits “significantly higher performance per Watt” than previous designs, according to Kontron, with a total power drain of around 3W for the 800MHz board model. (more…)

Linux video player gains playback capabilities

On2 has announced that MPlayer, the reference video and multimedia player for Linux, now supports two older On2 CODECs. On2 sells high-end CODECs used in set-top boxes, consumer electronics devices, and wireless applications. (more…)

Mini-ITX board boasts die-shrunk Pentium M

Single-board computer vendor Lippert announced mini-ITX form-factor board support for Intel's new Dothan processor, a 90nm die-shrink of the Pentium M released today by Intel.
