Ibase announced an embedded system featuring a single-core Atom N450 processor, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, and a 160GB, 2.5-inch hard disk drive. The CSB100-891 runs fanlessly, has a wall-mountable enclosure, and has four USB 2.0 ports plus a VGA output, the company says.
Thales announced the Touch Passenger Media Unit (TouchPMU), an Android-based in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) handheld with an ARM Cortex processor and a 3.8-inch touchscreen. Meanwhile, rival Panasonic is planning its own Android-based seat-back IFEC system, says reports.
Adlink Technology announced two COTS (commercial off the shelf) military computers, one featuring a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor and one featuring the 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo L5700. The MilSystem 735 and MilSystem 840 both come in rugged cases with passive cooling, include internal expansion, offer keyed STD-D38999 connectors, and accept 12 to 32 VDC inputs, the company says.
Freescale Semiconductor announced a Linux-ready, ARM9-based i.MX28x SoC and a Coldfire-based MCF5441x MCU, both targeting fanless industrial applications as well as automotive systems. The i.MX28x and MCF5441x each consume less than half a Watt, support extended temperatures, offer clock synchronized Ethernet, and with some models, include a Layer 2 switch for low-cost daisy-chaining of devices.
Sunnyvale-based MIPS Technologies announced processor IP that will bring multiple cores to products such as digital TVs, STBs (set-top boxes), and Blu-ray players. Said to already have a “yet-to-be-announced lead licensee,” the MIPS32 1074K CPS (coherent processing system) provides up to four cores, a CM (coherence management) unit, a CPC (cluster power controller), and optional FPUs (floating point units), the company says.
Sharp announced two color e-reader tablets set to ship in December, along with an electronic bookstore that will offer 30,000 books and periodicals with automated scheduled delivery services. The “Galapagos” is available in 10.8-inch and 5.5-inch versions, offers 802/11b/g Wi-Fi connections, and according to one report, runs Android.
Amazon.com has introduced new features for its Kindle for Android app, including the ability to search within an e-book via typing or voice. Meanwhile, the company has ratcheted up its marketing campaign for the Kindle e-reader itself, releasing a TV commercial that compares the Kindle's low price and better sunlight readability to the Apple iPad.
Portwell announced two Intel Atom-based Mini-ITX boards that support dual display capability. The WADE-8075 uses the 1.8GHz Atom D525 while the WADE-8076 adopts the 1.6GHz Atom N455, and both offer the Intel ICH8M chipset, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, four serial ports, up to 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, and PCI, PCIe, and Mini PCIe expansion, says the company.
WinSystems is shipping a rugged, PC/104 single board computer (SBC) running DMP Electronics' x86-compatible, 1GHz Vortex86DX processor. The PCM-VDX-2-512 is equipped with two Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and four serial ports, provides an optional SSD (solid state disk), and runs on 5.5 Watts, says the company.
Neofonie-owned WeTab GmbH has shipped what appears to be the first MeeGo-based tablet, the 11.6-inch, Intel Atom N450-based WeTab, which is also said to be compatible with Android. Meanwhile, a super-light NFS N-Pad tablet prototype has popped up running Android on an Intel Atom N6xx (“Moorestown”) processor.
Axiomtek announced a 3.5-inch embedded board that can be fitted with Intel's Atom N450, D410, or dual-core D510 processors. The Capa800 offers up to 1GB of DDR2 memory, CompactFlash and PCI Express expansion, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, eight USB ports, and four serial ports, says the company.
Trenton Technology announced an embedded motherboard that accepts the “Jasper Forest” Xeon processors introduced by Intel earlier this year. The JXM7031 supports up to 192GB of RAM, includes six SATA ports with RAID support, and offers three PCI Express slots and one 32-bit PCI slot, the company says.
Marvell announced a 1.5GHz, tri-core member of its Armada system-on-chip family. Aimed at smartphones and tablets, the Armada 628 combines two 1.5GHz ARM v7 cores with a specialized 624MHz system management core that reduces power consumption, adding six media processing engines that are claimed to deliver dual 1080p streams of 3D video plus “advanced 3D gaming performance.”
Nvidia announced that it will port its CUDA (compute unified device architecture) programming language directly to x86 chips. The chipmaker is also touting its next GPU (graphics processing unit), “Kepler,” which will be three or four times more powerful than the current Fermi product, according to industry reports.
Dell CEO Michael Dell was said to have flashed a seven-inch Android tablet at Oracle World that may be the previously rumored “Looking Glass.” Meanwhile, Pegatron is building an Nvidia Tegra 2-based Android tablet for HTC, and Motorola has postponed its Android tablet until early 2011, waiting for Android 3.0 and the launch of 4G LTE networks, say other reports.
